The kingpin of street urchins , How a tout became relevant in Nigerian Politics

MCOluomo

Lagos was a beautiful sight in south-west Nigeria, one of the wealthiest states of the Yoruba people, the ambience provides the tourist attractions to all and the desire to visit Lagos used to be the biggest dream for all until street urchins invaded Lagos from Kwara, Ibadan, Osun state in the quest for survival.

Mc Oluomo & women
The Yoruba people were renown for the academic excellence all across Africa, hardly would you find a home among the Yoruba people without a graduate, in the 60s, and 70s, The Yoruba people are known to reject being enlisted in the Nigerian Army as the general belief was that only drop-outs from school and never do wells would join the Army

consequently Yoruba Parents takes pride in investing in the academic success of their kids since Obafemi Awolowo paved the way for the region with free the Free Education program in south-west region of Nigeria .

The illiterates in Yoruba region were very few and you would have to travel out of Lagos to the villages in search of very poor people who are unable to access schools
,

This was one of the failures of the Free Education program of Awolowo, schools were inaccessible by roads in the villages, some Places have schools far away and to make a trip to such schools will require a long trip

This failure began the neglect which produces the likes of  Musiliu Akinsanya popularly known as MC Oluomo who was born in 1975  born to Akinsanya and Abebi Zinat Omotonwo and a school drop out when Education was free.

The Father of Mc Oluomo moved to Lagos from Abeokuta and settled in Oshodi

Another flaws of the Free Education program of Obafemi Awolowo was that, it does not give alternative to School drop-outs, You are abandoned and the system does not provides alternatives to those who cannot comprehend in school, so you have kids blaming their inability to continue school on their parents poverty of their demise as is the case with MC-Oluomo who claimed to have dropped out of school at the age of 13 after his father's death MC Oluomo  in his claim, attended Afolabi Primary School in Oshodi and Olu Efon Primary School in Abeokuta for his elementary education before dropping out.

His father's origin is from Abeokuta in Ogun state, this drop-out feels entitled to Lagos since he was born in Lagos where background checks and proper documentation of citizens is still unavailable

How then did a school drop-out gain the prominence terrorizing the entire Lagos as street urchins and using a government institution "Transport Union" as a means of survival, creating wealth for himself

In the 70s and 80s, drop-outs from school often resorts to Bus- parks as (They still do) some of them become notorious for crimes, murders and robberies, A few one becomes conductors, these Bus conductors will wait for Vehicle owners who want to make money conveying passengers from one Place to the other.

Conductors attach themselves to these vehicle owners and start making a living as assistant drivers, some of them will learn how to drive using the same method without government regulation, since the regulators are bribe collectors in government offices, driver's license are then given to bus conductors who through a system of try and error becomes drivers.

Since the conductors have no permanent job and their jobs are dependent on their integrity with a particular driver at a time, they often roam the streets and committing crimes in the cover of darkness

These growing able-bodied men are disenchanted with society and have resigned to fate, unwilling to try out Education, having been shamed out of school half-way, they resort to various crimes.

Their numbers were few in the 60s and 70s because the institution of government was strong, The Police were less corrupt, and criminals were never given a free ride in the state as it is today

This situation never lasted as many dropouts from other parts of southwest and indeed Nigeria were trooping to Lagos to make quick money.

Transportaion was the most thriving trade for these abandoned youths as they could make a quick cash to feed themselves for the day from one trip before being abandoned by the Bus drivers

This is how street urchins began to grow in Lagos,

Since the standard of education was so high and these youths were unable to cope, they figured out a way of standing by the roadsides to ask drivers if they needed a Bus conductor, those who are fortunate get picked for the day, those who are not are left to survive through begging

It was this begging that became the avenue for the collection of tolls by Area boys popularly known as Agbero

some of the drivers will offer a few changes to these young men who did not get a bus for the day when they narrate their misfortune, consequently these Beggers became entitles and made a trade out of it

This is the point where MC Oluomo became a notoriety in Oshodi

Boys like him were trooping to Lagos from Kwara, Ilorin, Osun state, Abeokuta, Oyo state and they made Oshodi their home, some of them moved to Surulere, others moved to Epe , Ipaja, Ajegunle and the street urchins' group were growing

Don't forget, Area boys tricked the system to impose themselves as the face of transportation since the government was astronomically becoming corrupt, and corruption have not legal ground to bring offenders to book, the government abandoned their responsibility to the masses and gave rights to these Area boys who made themselves Kingpins across Lagos

They go by various aliases, they spitted themselves around Lagos and became a menace. some of the notorious criminals were controlling Surulere, there is Toba in Mushin, Muda Adigun, Olodan in Ajegunle, Eje (Blood) at Ajah and Epe and the list is endless

It was on the premise of crime that Politician began to give these criminals relevance in Lagos and other parts of Nigeria,

They would disturb those that are carrying out legitimate business, they beat old men and women in marketplaces to collect money which they called "Owo Ile"

Just Like MC Oluomo, the emergence of Bola Tinubu is shrouded in mystery, sometime in history, a man claimed to be a member of Nadeco and escaped under Abacha and went on exile with some prominent men and returned to Lagos to vie for the position of governor. Not so much was known about Tinubu except that he was hobnobbing the real Lagos people in "Isale Eco" another notorious hideout of street urchins

Since they have formed a net around Lagos, Tinubu at some point invited the biggest of the criminals and assigned them to several task using money to hoodwink them

He raised the bar and made them committed to his cause, extortion from market women and income from thuggery became a chicken fee to these street urchins and they always wait for elections to be compensated by politicians

They travel with politicians in a clandestine manner and are protected in their crimes against the masses, they are notorious for destabilizing elections and polls centers after being paid to do so or outrightly snatching ballot boxes, sometimes murder is part of their assignment depending on the desperation of their assignee

This is how Touts and Thugs were emboldened by the system and they were given license to operate without fear

Bola tinubu promoted these street urchins during his first tenure and subsequently began to promise them heaven on earth if they would help him to hold Lagos in his grips

He did a good job bribing them as some of them had their kids sponsored abroad and even travelled with the elite.

They were hired to destabilize Election in states, some pockets of branches also exist in Ibadan with various actors, they are there in Osun state and across the South.

These menaces are notorious for several unraveled atrocities, they are capable of anything just name it and pay the price

They have been waiting for Tinubu as they consider him as one who gave them leeway into the relevance which has been imposed on them by a failed society

They are known by the Police and are feared even by them in some cases as they are untouchable being protected in the Nigerian failed society
